Sr. Buyer/Planner
Contract Position
Manages and develops Supply Chain, plans and procures raw materials/capital equipment, leads various project teams and establishes commodity strategies for the business unit. Monitors on a continuous basis, inventory levels, quality of goods, pricing and timely delivery of goods and services. Works with representatives of such departments as, Accounting, Engineering, Marketing, Quality Assurance and Research and Development to source suppliers. Utilizes computerized purchasing systems to forecast supply demands and delivery timelines.
Job Responsibilities:
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
Works efficiently with other departments such as, engineering, marketing, quality and production to bring new product to market, maintain existing products, improve quality, manage material availability, and on time customer delivery.
Participates or leads cross functional business teams as required in support of new product development, supply chain management or System/Process improvements.
Maintains open lines of communication both verbal and written with suppliers and representatives of other departments to creatively solve problems.
INVENTORY PLANNING/SCHEDULING:
Reviews mrp on a daily basis to assist in the scheduling and planning of purchases of raw fabrics and fabric constructions used in window fashion production. Inputs purchase orders into SAP computer system. Works with suppliers on quality, pricing, terms of delivery, and contract provisions. Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual usage projections for suppliers to aid in long and short range planning.
Monitors on a daily basis the delivery dates of materials, inventory levels and production forecasts. Contacts suppliers to expedite delivery of materials due to low inventory levels. Tracks shipment of materials and places tracers with delivery companies on undelivered materials.
SOURCING/NEGOTIATIONS:
Searches out supplier sources of assigned commodities. Searches may be conducted by communicating with preexisting suppliers to locate a supplier who may be able to provide the unique good or service required; searches may be conducted using the Internet; searches may also be conducted by consulting various industry and trade publications in addition to Thomas Register of Manufacturers.
Mitigates supply chain risks associated with sole source suppliers, manufacturing capacity, engineering specifications, and pricing.
Establishes/Negotiates supply contracts with key suppliers in support of Vendor Managed Inventories, JIT deliveries, managed liability, part lifecycle, and other critical terms such as but not limited to Confidentiality, Indemnity, Warranty, and other applicable terms.
Conducts benchmark analysis of supply chain logistics and commodity pricing to drive sourcing strategies. Develop strategies for annual cost reductions with supply partners.
A working knowledge of C-TPAT processes and procedures.
SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS:
Maintains the competitive bidding system of quotation activity with suppliers. Documents any and all contact between suppliers and business unit buyer’s according to company adopted ISO-9001 requirements.
Establish annual supplier goals and provide clear direction regarding inventory management, flexible deliveries, reaction time to material issues (stock outs, quality issues), cost reductions, new product development.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
Lead commodity/project teams to establish supplier goals, sourcing strategies, system improvements/updates, process improvements, and new product materials development.
Develop project timelines, strategic tasks, and reporting mechanisms to assure project is on track. Present project status to management team for review of progress, actions, issues and accomplishments.
Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of some principles of engineering to understand product development processes.
Basic knowledge of the compositions of fabric and the changes it undergoes during the production process.
Solid knowledge of the manufacturing properties of plastic, wood, electronics and metal.
Solid knowledge of computer use and software such as Word, Excel, SAP, MRP system.
Expert knowledge of the principles of purchasing.
Expert knowledge of sourcing techniques and supply chain logistics.
Expert knowledge of the principles of negotiation to aid in working with suppliers of goods and services.
Skill in developing and maintaining effective work relationships with department representatives such as, Engineering, Accounting, Marketing, Quality Assurance and suppliers.
Skill in analyzing inventory forecast and demand level information.
Ability to demonstrate initiative in pursuing alternate sourcing techniques of suppliers of goods or services.
Ability to use creative problem-solving techniques to resolve issues where there are delays in delivery of goods or price increases.
Ability to use professional discretion in working with highly confidential proprietary information.
Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and technical drawings.
Acceptable Training and Experience includes a four-year degree in business with an emphasis in purchasing. Five or more years of business experience. A substitute of seven or more year’s business experience in lieu of a four-year degree. Training in materials management within a manufacturing environment is required. Previous experience with procurement of textiles, metal extrusions, and/or injection molded plastics beneficial. Ongoing professional development through courses offered by APICS is desired, CPIM or CPM preferred.
